Tale of (Two) Painters

Hey everyone!

Yes a 3++ post. Expect another soon as well *gasp*.

So in an effort to encourage myself to blog more and get the site back up and running, Vinsanity and I are doing a painting challenge with the primary focus being on two armies each for Warmachine / Hordes. If anyone else would like to jump on board, please be my guest and just email me with what you’ll be doing and then with the weekly updates. I’ll keep track of everything with a post on Tuesday with pictures and everything. Much excitement I know.

With this in mind, the below is what we are looking to paint with the goal of a Warmachine / Hordes point per day. As things get painted we will cross them out :).

Vinsanity’s Choice of 40K and Fantasy Tournament Lists Lists!

Hey guys. So around here we have a 40k and a fantasy tourney coming up quite soon and I’m planning to go to both. I just wanted some list thoughts on these. For the 40k one, it will either be Necrons or Orks at 1850 and for the fantasy one it will either be Beastmen or Orcs & Goblins at 2500… So onto the lists. I will have comments after each one…
1850 Necrons

2x Necron Overlord – Warscythe, Catacomb Command Barge with Gauss Cannon 360pts
2x 4 Crypteks – 4 x Eldritch Lances, 1 Cryptek has a Sonar Pulse, (1 Cryptek in one of the squads has a Gaze of Flame) 160pts and 170pts

2x Triarch Stalkers – Heat Ray 300

2x 5 Necron Warriors in Ghost Arks 360
2x 5 Immortals – Tesla Carbines 170

Fast Attack

2x 5 Scarabs 150

Heavy Support

2x Annihilation Barges – Underslung Gauss Cannons 180

Total: 1850

Notes: Its very symmetrical 😀 It appears to have enough firepower to deal with most lists but I think mech IG and mech SW still scare the shit out of me. Heavy meltagun armies too. Ideally I’d run 4×5 immortals and 4 nightscythes… alas I do not have the money for that. I think this list has a bit of everything which might be good or bad depending on how you look at it…

So list 2 is Orks:

1850 Orks (WAAAGH!!)

Big Mek – Kustom Force Field 85
Warboss Power Klaw, ‘eavy Armour 90

4x Meganobz – Kombi Rokkit, Kombi Skorcha 170 1x Dedicated Battlewagon – Deffrolla, Big Shoota 115

20x Boyz – Sluggas, Choppas, 1 is Nob – Bosspole, Power Claw, Slugga 160
20x Boyz – Sluggas, Choppas, 1 is Nob – Bosspole, Power Claw, Slugga 160
12x Boyz – Sluggas, Choppas, 1 is Nob – Bosspole, Power Claw, Slugga 112 1x Dedicated Trukk Big Shoota, Reinforced Ram 40
12x Boyz – Sluggas, Choppas, 1 is Nob – Bosspole, Power Claw, Slugga 112 1x Dedicated Trukk Big Shoota, Reinforced Ram 40
10x Grots – Runherder 40
4x Meganobz – Kombi Rokkit, Kombi Skorcha 170 1x Dedicated Battlewagon – Deffrolla, Big Shoota 115

Fast Attack

 3x 2 Warbuggies Twin-Linked Rokkit Launchas 210

Heavy Support 2x Battlewagons – Deffrolla, Big Shoota 115

Total: 1850

Notes: It is Orks so they’re automatically winning since they never lose a fight… Basically its a Battlewagon rush with a lot more claws than I previously had. I did consider Dakkajets but they were too expensive money and points wise. The former list was a bit slow with the 9 kanz not being able to keep up while this one has lots of boyz that can hit fairly hard and quite quickly, depending on the state of the wagons after being shot a bit. Vehicles are still a problem but… its Orks so enemy vehicles will always be a problem. Hopefully games will finish on time with this list too, the 25 vehicle Ork army got to turn 4 if I was lucky =/

Now onto the fantasy lists. I haven’t played fantasy in quite a while and while 8th isn’t exactly to my liking, its still quite a fun game and over half of my collection is fantasy so I’m all in at this point 😀

2500 Night Goblins

Lords (555):

Skarsnik and Gobbla 275
2 x Night Goblins Great Shaman (Lvl 3) 280

Heroes (142):

Night Goblin Big Boss – BSB, Standard of Discipline, light armour, shield 74
2 x Night Goblin Big Boss – Great Weapons 68

Core (782):

64 x Night Goblins – spears, shields, Full Command, 2 Fanatics, Netters 317
50 x Night Goblins – hand weapons, shields, Full Command, 2 Fanatics, Netters 275
2 x 20 Night Goblins – shortbows, standard, 1 Fanatic 190

Special (610):

Squig Herd – 30 Squigs, 10 Herders 270
Squig Herd – 30 Squigs, 10 Herders 270
2 x Spear Chukkas 70

Rare (465):

2 x Mangler Squigs 130
2 x Doomdivers 160
1 x Rock Lobbas 85
2 x Snotling Pump Wagons 90

Total: 2554

Notes: Why yes that is two hordes of squigs… I’m over points on this one and not sure what to cull, probably bigbosses or spear goblins. Skarsnik does delaying things and his Ld is quite high (for a night goblin) with the Standard in the horde unit so thats my best bet against hordes of Night Goblins running away. I think its got enough hitting power and magic to do some nice damage and enough goblins to hang around in fights for a little bit longer, especially with netters. The shooting was originally better but I decided to add more goblins 😀

Finally onto the beastmen…

2500 Beastmen

 Lords – 573pts

Beastlord, Armor of Destiny, Crown of Command, Sword of Battle, Shield 248
Great Bray Shaman, Lvl 4 (Lore of Beasts), Fencer’s Blades, Jagged Dagger, Talisman of Preservation 325

Heroes – 546pts

Wargor BSB, Beast Banner, Gnarled Hide, Heavy Armor, Shield 206
Bray Shaman (Lore of Shadow), Shard of the Herdstone 125
Bray Shaman (Lore of Shadow), Dispell Scroll 100
Bray Shaman (Lore of Shadow), Chalice of Dark Rain 115

Core – 646pts

39 Gors, AHW, Full Command 337
40 Ungors, Standard Bearer, Musician, Spears 249
2×5 Ungor raiders 60

Special – 733pts

39 Bestigors, Full Command, Standard of discipline 513
2×5 Harpies 110
Razorgor 55
Razorgor 55

Total – 2498pts

Notes: Beastmen are underrated in 8th. I don’t think they’re a very popular army either which probably has something to do with the interwebz perception that they’re shit… Anyway, the core of the list are obviously the combat blocks that can/are buffed by beast banner/beast magic, whilst the enemy is constantly debuffed by annoying shadow signature spell. The Chalice is pretty nice too because one of the weaknesses of Beastmen is the enemy shooting phase 😛 Beastmen armies are pretty good in that they have enough disposable chaff to deploy before any real units as well as get in the way of things I don’t want to get near with my main blocks. Primal fury + debuffed enemy tends to result in dead enemy 🙂 Anyway, that’s about it.

Any comments about lists would be much appreciated, I don’t have too long to decide which ones to take 😀

Vinsanity’s Legion of Everblight & Necrons

Hey pinkies. A painting update from me with Necrons and Legion of Everblight done so far. A fair bit still to do for both and the Necrons have to be done for a tourney in late June and the to do list includes 12 Scarabs, 4 Ghost Arks, 5 Crypteks, 2 Stalkers, 5 Immortals, 3 Annihilation Barges and 1 Command Barge with Overlord 😉

Remember I do commissions so if interested then simply email me here!

Vincey’s Initial Warmachine Thoughts

Hey pinkies. So Kirby wants my WM thoughts because he can’t think of what to post in this timeslot they provide valuable insight into the game as we learn it together (duh)! So here I am with my thoughts after our first RL 15pt WM game. Remember, this is coming from a noob who has only played a 15 pt game…

1) Threat ranges: Probably the most important thing in this game and kinda goes hand in hand with the second point. As you saw from the bat rep, I lost Butcher having not realised that Kreoss has such a potent (although risky) assassination threat range with his reach weapon and his feat… I also didn’t know that models could charge around others into combat (even if he couldn’t see which I think he might have been able to) and hence i overextended Butcher and lost him (though we know this to be incorrect in terms of Kreoss getting the charge but he still could have engaged Butcher in melee so moot point). This is on me though, having not read the rules properly (or at all!)

2) Know thy enemy: This is important in any game but seems very critical in WM because whilst the mechanics of the game are the same, the different factions are all very different and can bring some nasty tricks. I didn’t know what anything did in the Menoth army and I’m sure Kirby wasn’t very familiar with Khador either. The different threat ranges of things are a big deal here, because overextending those 1-2 inches often will spell death for your caster. That is perhaps going to be our greatest challenge with WM, knowing the enemy that we are facing and what they can and cannot do and what you can and cannot do to them…

3) Khador is slooooooow: Like… yea. Obviously that is part of the playstyle with the high armour of jacks and often his DEF of the infantry but what it often means is that you have to take the first blood and get charged by big hurty stuff and be prepared to hit very hard on the counter. It seems well and good but a little bit limiting in what they can do (there might be fast Khador lists out there, I don’t know lol).

4) Getting used to the ‘doing everything with one model before the next’: Coming from 40k and having never played WM before, it is fairly different and you have to think a little differently. Enough said here I guess, I will get used to this and I quite like the mechanics.

5) Too many jacks: Some Khador casters have trouble supporting more than 1-2 jacks and even with Butcher, his 6 focus often went pretty quickly (mostly to Destroyer). I guess I will get used to playing with 1-2 jacks in most lists rather than going with unbalanced 4-5 jack style (however, Karchev is different ^^)

I think thats about it for now 😛 I really really like WM from my limited experience, the mechanics seem very nice and I quite like having to think of what to allocate your focus on. There seems much more reliance on building balanced lists that compliment and support each other using different units which is a nice change from having to face 6 of the same unit and transport in 40k. Indeed, the jacks almost exclusively rely on the casters to give them the ability to do much more than just the minimal. So overall, from my limited experiences I’m really enjoying WM 😛 If anyone has any Khador or general Warmachine advice for me (and I am asking for any advice here!), drop me an email and I would be much obliged! 😀

Vinsane Painting Commissions

Hey guys. So I’ve got the price down with which I’m happy. It’s $20 AUD per hour and I’d like to think I’m a pretty quick painter. I’d estimate that 10 tacticals would take 3-4 hours and a rhino would take 2 hours, as a general guideline. There are extra costs for building and postage but they will be variable… For example, to build 10 tacticals it would be $5 and rhino would be $7, raiders and wave serpents would be $10, etc. Obviously I would rather paint the models rather than build them but if people want me to build them, that can be done too. So if anyone is interested, drop me an email

Vinsane Painting Commissions Pricing Question and Pics

Hey pinkies. So I was thinking of starting up a commission painting service for anyone interested as I need a bit of cash 😛

I do have some problems regarding pricing and thats why I’d like to ask 3++ for any ideas. Should I go fixed cost per model or per unit or even go with an hourly rate? Then there is also an issue with getting overseas clients because our (normally poor) Aussie dollar is going quite well atm so it wouldn’t be so affordable for US clients because our dollar is higher atm. I think any UK clients should be ok however…

Another thing is that I need to probably charge for spraying, building and basing any models which I have to buy here. It would be ideal if people probably send over their models and I will send them back after painting rather than me paying the ridiculous Aussie GW prices in buying the models and then passing on that cost to clients. It isn’t ideal to buy local GW models but it is an option I guess…

Anyway, the 2nd part of this post is to show of some minis I’ve done so as to better assess the prices to charge and to get some of my piccies out there for potential clients to see. If anyone wants pics of anything not shown, I’ve probably got pics of it in my photobucket gallery (its a bit disorganised :P) Anywho, drop me comments re pricing et al here and email me if you are interested in some Vinsane Painting 😛

Pics in random order ^^ (and Vince apologies for screwing up this post after it was posted and taking it down *eyeroll*).

Counts-As Iron Hands Idea

Hey pinkies. So I had a cool counts as idea about using Iron Hands with the Space Wolf Codex and specifically using Chumby’s Loganwing list or some variation of it.

The rationale: Iron Hands don’t have terminator squads but rather have termi sarges leading marines. So Wolf Guard with a terminator WG are perfect for this.

The SM codex further doesn’t really do justice to the Iron Hands. Am I supposed to take A MotF with 6 dreads? Iron Hands fluffwise don’t have a billion dreadies, only really their Iron Fathers get the full treatment and become Dreadies. Hence, I can add Bjorn in some games so as to represent the HQ dread that Iron Hands would have.

In terms of modelling, I had a few ideas too. The Thunderwolf Cav in the list will remain. I was thinking of using the Ironhood Brethren tracked guys as the body of the TWC conversion then adding a marine torso and lots of bionics and servo arms to taste.

Next, the Lone Wolves may represent a heavily bionicked (sp?) terminator who shrugs off shots from FnP. Lots of bionics here and servo arms too.

Some of the Fangs will have quite tech gear, having missile launchers on their backpacks with lots of cables and wiring, etc. The dready conversion will be tough but I think the FW ironclad body with GW Venerable dread arms then iron hands symbols and servo arms would be adequate. Finally, Logan himself would be another bigger terminator with bionics and servo arms (oh really?) but I’d make him stand out somehow, perhaps using a Scibor Mini as a base then converting it.

Anywho, thoughts and conversion ideas? Don’t be hatin’ on me (to those armchair warriors) 😀 And don’t fucking say: Just use the SM codex you noob! I already have a codex SM army (My Imperial Fists), why would I want another with little variation to it?

Comments/thoughts gogo!
